Dan Goggin scores his first Munster try

Munster scored six tries to claim a 39-22 bonus-point win over the Kings at Outeniqua Park in George on Saturday.

Munster survived an almighty scare as they overcame a gutsy first-half performance from the Kings to win their first game on South African soil.

Ian Keatley slotted a penalty in the 17th minute, but the visitors were far from their best. They controlled possession and territory early on but failed to translate that dominance into points.

That said, the Kings’ defiance defence during that period should be lauded.

The hosts were duly rewarded for their show of resistance, when they scored two quick tries against the odds.

When Munster were down to 14 men after Gerbrandt Grobler was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, the Kings went on the attack. Short on numbers out wide, the Kings targeted that channel and Andisa Ntsila found the space to run in the opening try.

Masixole Banda added the extras. It wasn’t long before lock Stephan Greeff strode over for another Kings try. Banda skewed that conversion, but when Munster were penalised at a ruck, he nailed a penalty goal to put the Kings 15-3 to the good.

Their joy was shortlived though as Munster struck back twice before the break. Back to full complement, unconverted tries by Niall Scannell and Calvin Nash made it a two-point game at half-time.

Johann van Graan’s charges moved up a gear when the second half commenced. They strong-armed the Kings, who simply had no defensive answer to halt the onslaught on their line.

CJ Stander barged over for a try to put Munster back in front and then the floodgates opened as they ran in a further three tries.

The Kings had the final say with a late breakaway effort, but in the end, it was another defeat for Deon Davids’ side. As usual, though, the Kings deserve an A for effort.
